The custom of using a family coat of arms, or family crest, has been prevalent in Europe since the beginning of the 12th century when knights started adding designs, images and symbols to their armour. This helped soldiers to tell the difference between their own army and the enemy on a battlefield. It also aided people in identifying the knights apart during the tournaments.

These symbols are oftentimes called \"achievements of arms\" or coats of arms, and the understanding of these has come to be known as heraldry. The vocabulary used to illustrate the elements of a coat of arms is called \"blazonry\". A great many of these words and phrases stem from the French language. A coat of arms is still put together by people called heralds, and the process is known as heraldry.
